Our Community Affairs work focuses on building and maintaining relationships with neighboring communities in southwestern Baltimore County and Baltimore City, including with business and community groups, K-12 schools, civic organizations, and nonprofits. Our office also focuses on building and maintaining relationships with the executive and legislative branches of local governments in Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and other key jurisdictions around the state.
As a centrally located anchor institution in southwestern Baltimore County, UMBC has built and maintains relationships with our neighboring communities of Arbutus and Catonsville. Our office is actively involved in enhancing those relationships through partnerships with community and business organizations including the Greater Arbutus Business Association, the Greater Catonsville Chamber of Commerce, and the Southwest Visions Foundation.
In addition, we are actively working on issues of concern to our campus neighbors including:
- The transfer of the Spring Grove Hospital Center property to UMBC.
- Traffic, road, and infrastructure improvements near campus.
President Sheares Ashby tours the Arbutus and Catonsville business districts.
